How to use this generator
Choose a faction style, then click "Generate Names." Switching the faction style automatically refreshes the results to match. Space Marine and Chaos Marine also show a Lean option, and Space Marine results include a suggested chapter name underneath. Click any name to copy it.
The five naming styles, explained
- Space Marine — a strong first name paired with a grim, battle-earned epithet (for example, a first name followed by "the Unbroken" or "Ironjaw"), mirroring how superhuman soldier-characters in grimdark sci-fi settings are traditionally named: part identity, part legend.
- Chaos Marine — the same first-name-plus-epithet structure as Space Marine, but drawing from a separate word bank built around corruption and ruin rather than battle honor, reflecting how a fallen or turned warrior in this genre is typically renamed rather than keeping an unchanged identity.
- Ork — short, blunt, guttural invented names paired with a boastful title like "da Krusha" or "da Warlord," reflecting the loud, aggressive, unsubtle culture typically associated with ork-like factions in the genre.
- Imperial Guard — a military rank, a plain human surname, and an invented regiment designation, reflecting the "ordinary soldier against overwhelming odds" archetype common in grimdark military sci-fi.
- Inquisitor — a surname paired with an invented internal division designation, reflecting the secretive, compartmentalized investigator archetype common in this genre.
All names, epithets, chapter designations, and division names generated here are original inventions created specifically for this tool. No existing chapter names, character names, regiment names, or other proprietary terms from any specific franchise are used.
Gender lean, and a bonus chapter name
Space Marine and Chaos Marine results can be leaned Feminine, Masculine, or left as Any, which draws from both pools. Ork, Imperial Guard, and Inquisitor results are not affected by this setting, since those three archetypes are built around a rank, title, or guttural invented word rather than a personal first name. Every time Space Marine is selected, the generator also suggests a chapter name — an organization-level name rather than an individual one — since chapter-specific naming is a distinct, frequently searched need separate from naming one character.
Where these searches actually come from
Interest in this space breaks down into a few recognizable groups, based on the specific terms people search for. Some searches reference particular Imperial Guard regiments or Space Marine Chapters by name, and others reference specific loyalist or renegade Chapters, or newer factions and games within the setting, including a 2022-era squat-like faction and a recent grimdark video game centered on low-ranking Imperial conscripts. This generator does not reproduce any of those specific proprietary names directly, but the five styles above are built to cover the same general territory: loyal Space Marine, corrupted Space Marine, ordinary human soldier, alien greenskin, and secretive investigator.
A note on planets, ships, and other place names
A meaningful share of related searches are actually for place and vehicle names rather than character names — naming a planet, a starship, a system, or a piece of hardware in this setting is a distinct task from naming a person, and this generator does not currently cover it. It is a strong candidate for a dedicated tool of its own in the future, built around Imperial world-naming conventions (hive worlds, forge worlds, death worlds, and similar categories) rather than being folded into a character generator that was not designed for it.
